The Henry Vaughan poetry trail is in Talybont-on-Usk. Henry Vaughan (1621-1695) was born and lived most of his life in the valley of the Usk. He is buried in Llansantffraed churchyard. Henry and his twin brother Thomas were Welsh-speaking but were educated and wrote in English. They were engaged in the Civil War in the 1940s, on the Royalist side. Henry became a physician; Thomas was an Anglican priest and a student of alchemy.
Why did Siegfried Sassoon visit Vaughan’s grave? This is an interesting reflection. And why did Ian Hamilton Finlay include Vaughan in Little Sparta?
